Understanding gas output, number of torches and tip sizes

There is a lot of confusion surrounding the number of torches used with microflame equipment. Many suppliers offer two and four man systems but fail to point out that with multi operators the flame size can be drastically reduced. Some suppliers only supply three tips with a max tip size of 0.8mm – this type of equipment is only suitable for limited micro soldering applications.

Aquaflame offers a much more powerful and flexible soldering solution – a system that will handle most of the soldering jobs in a jewellery environment. Aquaflame is used universally by repairing jewellers, designer jewellers, repair centres and some factories with soldering departments with up to 10 staff.

The Aquaflame range

The Aquaflame Model 500 generates 75 litres gas per hour and is supplied with eight torch tips 2 each in sizes 0.6mm (Tip no 23), 0.7mm (Tip no 22), 0.8mm (Tip no 21) and 0.9mm (Tip no 20). The extra capacity allows the operator to do much more than just fine soldering  – see our fact sheet 004 – jewellery soldering applications.

Our Model 500 can be used with two torches (with second man operator kit). Please note that with the same gas output and two torches it will only support a max tip sizes of 0.8mm (Tip no 21) per torch. We do not recommend using the 500 as a dual torch because it will be underpowered.

The Aquaflame model 800 generates 120 litres gas per hour and is supplied with twelve torch tips 2 each in sizes 0.6mm (Tip no 23), 0.7mm (Tip no 22), 0.8mm (Tip no 21), 0.9mm (Tip no 20), 1.10mm (Tip no 19) and 1.25mm (Tip no 18). The Model 800 can do everything the 500 can do PLUS it will solder platinum and do melt ups of about 25gms. The Model 800 is our best selling machine and is used universally in Europe by repairing jewellers, designer jewellers, repair centres and some factories with soldering departments of under 10 staff.

Our model 800 can be used with two torches (with second man operator kit). Like the 500 however with the same gas output and two torches the max tip size per torch will be reduced. In two operator mode the 800 is the same as having two model 500’s. The max tip size is therefore 0.9mm (Tip no 20) for each torch.

The Model 800 is fine to be used with two operators and effectively becomes two Model 500 machines. Please note that with the same gas output and two torches it will only support a max tip sizes of 0.9mm (Tip no 20) per torch

Aquaflame also offers a Model 1200 which generates 240 litres per hour and is supplied with fourteen torch tips 2 each in sizes 0.6mm (Tip no 23), 0.7mm (Tip no 22), 0.8mm (Tip no 21), 0.9mm (Tip no 20), 1.10mm (Tip no 19), 1.25mm (Tip no 18) and 1.50mm (Tip no 17). The 1200 will do everything the 800 can do and it will do melt ups to 30gms. In jewellery applications people buy a 1200 if they want to run it in two operator  mode effectively creating 2 x 800 machines or if they want to run it in 4 operator mode creating 4 x 500 machines. As a four man machine an extra booster is required running 2 torches off each booster.

Please see table below showing tip sizes, flame length / capacity for each model.
